Dr. James Jackson and Dr. John C. Warren initially sought funds for a hospital in Boston, Mass. which would also be made available to student s of the Harvard Medical School for clinical training. It was incorporated in 1811 as Massachusetts General Hospital, and in 1817 Jackson and Warren were appointed as acting physician and surgeon, respectively. The first patients were admitted in 1821. The Massachusetts Medical Society was founded in 1781. Early members of the society published its transactions and papers presented at meetings; in 1812 they began publishing New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery. In the early 19th century Harvard College and the society agreed that both organizations could examine candidates and award a degree or a certificate of approval, as appropriate.
